Sidney Lanier completed the 2016 season with a 8-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region two, the Poets earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Sidney Lanier's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Daphne by a score of 24-6. The Poets improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2006. The Poets won as many games as in any season since 2000. Since 2010, the Sidney Lanier football program has struggled with a record of 19-53. Over the past 25 seasons, Sidney Lanier has managed to compile a record of 96-171. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 48th in Class 6A and 312nd in the AHSAA. The Poets are led by head coach Marvin Cunningham who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 8-3 record in his first season at Sidney Lanier. The Poets saw improvement from a 4-7 record the season before coach Cunningham arrived. Under his direction the Poets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cunningham. Coach Cunningham's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 8-3 (72.7%). The 8-3 record last year was the best for the Poets since the 200 season. The Sidney Lanier Poets will play in Class 6A region two during the 2017 season. The Poets should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. The Poets open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Lee Montgomery on Thursday, August 24 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Lee Montgomery Generals finished with an overall record of 0-9 and in seventh place in Class 7A region two. Sidney Lanier and Lee Montgomery have met a total of 69 times on the football field. The Poets have a 21-46-2 record against the Generals. They last met in 2016 with Sidney Lanier winning by a score of 30-48. Sidney Lanier returns 6A All-State Senior defensive lineman Alfred Thomas. He was named to the first team last season.
